The Lutheran South hockey team is the last squad standing from the winter sports in the South County Patch area.
The Lancers will play for a championship Wednesday night as they take on Whitfield for the Wickenheiser Cup of the Mid-States Hockey Association. The game will be at 5:30 at the Scottrade Center.
Lutheran South has won both meetings against the Warriors during the regular season. The Lancers won 5-4 way back on Nov. 19 and cruised to a 10-2 win on Jan. 14.
A pair of Lancers along with several other area players competed in the league's South Senior All-Star game Wednesday at Webster. Zackery Beining and Chris Hill represented Lutheran South in the contest.
Other area all-stars included: Justin Welch and Brad Pallme of Northwest; Ryan Basgall and Tommy Heinzman of Oakville; P.J. Adams, Blake Pauly and Jerry Hercules of Seckman; Brendan Grelle of Fox; Ryan Giegling, Alex Leonard and Richard Schroell of Lindbergh; Brendan Miriani, Ryan Miriani and Chris Deffenbaugh of Mehlville; and Kory Rekowski and Adam Thrower of Rockwood Summit.
Heinzman led the Tigers with 23 goals and 20 assists for the season. Basgall had 6 goals and 11 assists. Mehlville's Marianis combined for 12 goals and 10 assists while Deffenbaugh had 4 goals and 7 assists during the season.
St. Louis University High, which eliminated Oakville in a tough semifinal round series, will take on rival CBC in the Challenge Cup championship contest. That will follow the Lutheran South-Whitfield game at Scottrade at 8 p.m.
Basketball
All south area basketball teams have been eliminated but a pair of St. Louis area schools will travel to Columbia this week to defend Class 5 championships.
McCluer North (26-1) defeated Vianney (27-2) in a battle of heavyweights 63-54 Saturday at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The Stars, who won the 2011 title, will take on Lee's Summit West (26-3) Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at the Mizzou Arena.
Marquette (21-10) will face Nixa (29-1) in the other Class 5 semifinal at 6:50 Thursday. Marquette made 11 of 18 of its 3-pointers in defeating CBC 66-53 in a semifinal Saturday. The Class 5 boys championship game will be played Saturday at 4:50.
