According to a Jackson Police Department news release, police received a tip on Dec. 20, 2010 that McCollum was attempting to hire someone to seriously injure Harold Johnson, the Jackson, TN, attorney who represented his ex-wife in their divorce.
The next day, investigators conducted an undercover operation to substantiate the threat, the release states. An undercover agent met with McCollum, who offered him money to "assault Johnson with a baseball bat with specific instruction to break numerous bones in his body."
According to investigators, Johnson had recently sent McCollum paperwork to modify prior court orders.
McCollum’s sentencing hearing is set for Jan. 11, jacksonsun.com reports. He is facing a punishment range of one to two years.
