Just another way to fill the coffers of Jefferson County. It's not about safety, it's all about the money.

"According to the department, sobriety checkpoints increase the opportunity for the apprehension of intoxicated and impaired drivers who would normally escape detection, unless they were observed committing a violation or in a traffic crash."

It seems as though the Jefferson County sheriff's office is undercutting its own argument for the checkpoint. They want to reduce accidents by taking dangerous drunk drivers off the road, but can't identify the driving habits they seek to eliminate in the first place. Instead of honing in on vehicles that travel the roads demonstrating behaviors associated with drunk driving (i.e.: maintain no lane, drive too slow, fail to turn on headlights, etc.), they need a breathalyzer to tell them if a motorist is dangerous. This does nothing to address the issue of drunk driving and adds another unneeded distraction for drivers who are lawfully and peaceably travelling public roads.
