Memorial Day Has Special Significance in Our Patch

Family members and friends can find and visit their fallen soldiers by using an online database.

Our proximity to the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery means that local residents have the opportunity to take part in a national observance ceremony there on Monday, May 30 at 10 a.m. to honor our fallen soldiers.

Memorial Day, originally Decoration Day, is a uniquely American holiday that began after the Civil War in 1868 when flowers were placed on the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The tradition spread and individual states began recognizing the observance. In 1967, Memorial Day became the official name of the day that honors our fallen soldiers.

The passing of the Uniform Holidays Bill on June 28, 1968, moved the observance of Memorial Day from May 30 to the last Monday in May. The law became effective in 1971.

Memorial Day has evolved over the years, especially after it became part of a three-day holiday weekend. It is still a time of reflection honoring our fallen soldiers, but it now marks the first weekend of the summer season. Barbecues, family gatherings, school endings, swimming pool openings, and national auto races are now associated with the last Monday in May.

Our community is still deeply involved with the original theme of the observance, perhaps because of our proximity to Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery where each year is held a Memorial Day ceremony. Local Boy Scout troops decorate each grave with an American flag. Memorial Day parking at the cemetery will be available at the Metro Station on Sheridan Road. There will be shuttles available to carry visitors the site of the ceremony. You may print out the grave site location or locations of your loved ones prior to visiting the cemetery.
