Pay for Hydrant or Lose Electricity

A Jefferson County family chose to live without power in a fight against the Antonia Fire Protection District and a $2,000 fire hydrant.

The Schlett family built a new family home about 35 miles south of St. Louis city but was forced to pay for a $2,000 hydrant.

Ed Schlett, who built the house, disagreed with the Antonia Fire Department, the STLtoday.com news website says.

Consequently, the fire department refused to sign the occupancy permit and the electricity company refused to prove power to the new home.

So the Schletts decided to live without power for five years as a statement for fair treatment.

We have lived in Jefferson County for 60 years and have built 3 new homes. We had to pay for a hydrant each time because we were the 1st house in the area. We always thought it unfair but paid it.
