Aldi, New Sno-Cone Locations Approved for Arnold

City Council members unanimously approved permits needed to allow businesses to open new locations in Arnold.

City Council members quickly and unanimously approved permits to allow Aldi grocery and S n J Sno Cone, a dessert retailer, to open new locations in Arnold.

During the May 19 City Council meeting at City Hall, at 2101 Jeffco Blvd., council members allowed a developer to split property owned by Kohl's Department Stores at 2150 Michigan Ave.

The action allows Aldi, an international grocer known for low-priced goods, to return to the city.

St. Louis-based developer John Sawyer told Planning and Zoning commissioners, at a separate meeting on May 10, that Kohl’s and Aldi corporate leaders learned their customers have similar preferences and purchasing habits, City Attorney Bob Sweeney said to council members.

“Arnold will be the pilot program for the partnership,” Sweeney said.

In a separate vote, council members granted a permit to S n J Sno Cone to open a location at 505-537 Jeffco Blvd.

The Arnold-based company is headquartered at 3857 West Outer Road.

The permit allows the company to operate business trailer, at the location, during the summer months for the next three years.

Large and heavy precast planters are needed at the location to prevent people from driving their cars up to the new location.

“I’m just worried about the safety of the children eating near the store,” Commissioner Jeff Fitter said during the May 10 Planning and Zoning meeting.

The sno-cone shop is scheduled to open this summer.

There is no formal date for construction to begin on Michigan Avenue for the new Aldi’s store.
