18 Arnold Organizations Lose Tax-Exempt Status

The organizations failed to file the required documents and any donations are now taxable, the IRS says.

Eighteen Arnold organizations lost their tax-exempt status, according to the Internal Revenue Service's office in St. Louis city.

Donations given to those organizations are no longer eligible to receive tax-deductable donations and the Arnold groups can be taxed for any income to property they receive, IRS spokesman Michael Devine said in a news release.

The groups lost their tax-exempt status because their leaders did not file legally required annual returns or notices for the last three years.

β€œThe IRS believes the majority of these organizations are defunct, but there are special steps to help any existing organizations to apply for reinstatement of their tax-exempt status,” IRS spokesman Michael Devine said in a news release.

The groups should go to the IRS web site www.irs.gov to find information to restore their tax exempt status, Devine said.

About 680 organizations failed to provide those documents this year and joined more than 8,400 Missouri groups that lost their tax exempt status overall, Devine said.

The Pension Protection Act in 2006 requires tax-exempt organizations to file an annual information return or notice with the IRS. For small organizations, the law requires a filing requirement for the first time in 2007.Β

The law automatically revokes the tax-exempt status of any organization that fails to file required documents for most recent three consecutive years.
