Arctic Temps, Wind Chill in Arnold

Arnold, and St. Louis region, residents should prepare to deal with sub-zero temperatures and wind chill factors for the next day.

Arnold residents waking early and commuting to work should prepare to deal hazardous temperatures and road conditions Thursday morning. 

Today's daytime high temperature will be about 16 degrees Fahrenheit with wind chill factors at minus 10 degrees during the day, according to the National Weather Service website. 

Water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

The extremely cold temperatures will increase the chances of quickly freezing any liquid, or creating patches of ice, on the roads, bridges and intersections.

Regular road salt will not work at that low temperature.

MoDOT uses a combination of  beet juice, calcium chloride and salt, along with a few other compounds to prevent ice build up in arctic temperatures, District Maintenance Engineer Becky Allmeroth said in a news conference on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service said tonight's overnight low temperature will be 1 degree Fahrenheit with wind chill factors as low as minus 15 degrees. 

No snow is expected for the next few days, the NWS said.
