Project ChildSafe: Free Gun Locks at Windsor High School Thursday

Local law enforcement agencies will be handing out 5,200 free gun locks around the St. Louis metro area. The locks are being provided by Project ChildSafe, according to a Tuesday St. Louis County Police Department news release.

The Jefferson County Sherrif Department will be offering the locks at their office on the Windsor High School campus, as well as at their Hillsboro, High Ridge and Jefferson College Campus locations.

Project ChildSafe is a nationwide program designed to help ensure safe and responsible firearm ownership and storage. It was developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and supported by a U.S. Department of Justice grant. The name Project ChildSafe has been adopted by this group with the permission of the NSSF. The NSSF itself is further supporting this initiative by donating gunlocks and literature, and has agreed to provide representation on the day of the event.

Staff at said the type of gun lock being given away by Project ChildSafe is similar to those included with new pistols. They said a cable lock is very simple and easy to use. The lock's cable is run through the weapon in such a way that prevents it from being loaded. ()
