Police: Arnold Father Admits to Shaking Infant

Jamell Johnson was charged Tuesday with child abuse and endangering the welfare of a child after his daughter Aliyah McFarland died from injuries sustained during the abuse.

Home alone with his infant daughter, Jamell Michael Johnson said he shook, spanked and squeezed her, eventually causing her death, according to police.

Aliyah McFarland, 18-months-old, had “bilateral retinal hemorrhages, severe head injury with right frontal hemorrhage and cerebral edema,” as well as bruises on her face, buttock, and upper leg, according to the Arnold Police Department Probable Cause Statement.

A doctor at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital told police Aliyah died there due to the injuries she had sustained.

The Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s office charged Johnson, 21, with first-degree child abuse, a class A felony, and first-degree endangering the welfare of a child, a class C felony.

Police said Johnson called 911 Sunday asking for an ambulance at his home on Crosswinds Drive in Arnold, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch. The ambulance took 18-month-old Aliyah to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center.

Aliyah was on a ventilator, declared brain-dead and finally taken off life support Monday.

As news about Aliyah's death spread, for her.

Hey Jamell, Too bad your dad didn't do these awful things to you. I don't want to pay for your keep, so I hope you get the needle or someone offs you in the booty farm! If not you should be sterilized.

i feel so sad for that baby the kids always pay the price for trash parents when will these coal haulers understand when they hook up with these thugs?

It's Mcfarlane and she's 20 months old, and he did not live the apartment he was watching her. Jamell is not a thug of any means. Coal hauler? The mother is not white. Ignorance.

It is such a shame that this happened. Most people have experienced a time when a crying baby just pushed you to the end of your rope. He probably was spanked as a child, too, so that was his first inclination....too bad that he didn't know about Crisis Nursery or know to put the baby in a safe place and go outside until he could regain his equilibrium. Or call a friend or neighbor. Now he and the mother will forever have to face the fact that he killed his baby. And he will serve time for it, too. Heartbreaking for everyone. For all here who want retribution, instead make a donation to the Crisis Nursery (I don't know any of them, just saying...) so they can help more people out of this situation. $5 ? Less than a McDonald's meal...think about it.
