Arnold Council Approves Purchase of Salt Dome

Structure will help prevent runoff, public works director says.

Arnold City Council members approved a $231,140 contract with Dome Corporation of North America Thursday to construct and 82-foot in diameter, 45-foot tall salt dome on the city’s public works property off Arnold Tenbrook Road.

Public Works Director Bryson Baker said the dome, capable of holding up to 3,300 tons of salt, will help protect the city’s stockpile from weather-related depletion as well as preventing runoff into nearby creeks and the Meramec River.

“It’s something the Missouri Department of Natural Resources really prefers cities to do,” Baker said.  “We have a lot of problems with the salt when we leave it outside, and it clumps and freezes and our workers have to get up on top of the trucks to break it up. There’s multiple benefits.”

Baker said Dome Corporation of North America’s bid came in slightly less the city’s $250,000 budget for the project.
