Arnold Councilmen to Discuss Cold Medicine Sales, Business Signs

During Thursday's work session, Arnold councilmen will also discuss implementing a new no-parking zone on Rockwood Drive.

Arnold city councilmen will discuss a new resolution during Thursday’s work session at City Hall at 2101 Jeffco Blvd. to limit the sales of certain over-the-counter medicines used to make meth.

People using meth experience intense happiness or euphoria, states the federal National Institute on Drug Abuse website, which is managed by the National Institutes of Health.

Jefferson County has led the nation in meth arrests and the presence of meth labs for the last 10 years, said Jefferson County Sheriff Oliver "Glenn" Boyer in a document included in the Arnold City Council discussion packet posted on the city website.

In the letter, the sheriff asks councilmen to restrict the sales of cold medicines containing the compound ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, ingredients used to make meth.

Other cold medicines that lack ephedrine can provide relief, the sheriff said.

In March, two meth traders reached for handguns during Sheriff’s Department arrests, Boyer said. A bullet hit Corporal Gerald Williams in the arm and, in a separate incident, deputies stopped a suspect from pulling a .45 caliber handgun from his waistband, the sheriff said.

“These types of incidents will continue without your (the councilmen’s) help,” Boyer said in the letter.

Business Sign Ordinance Amendments

A proposed law will allow Arnold business owners to use A-Frame signs throughout the year for an annual fee ranging from $120 to $150, said Community Development Director Mary Holden during the city council meeting at City Hall, at 2101 Jeffco Blvd. Thursday.

Councilmen delayed voting on the proposed law on Thursday because no councilmen had the proposed fees for the signs.

During the meeting, Dylan’s Sports Bar employee Randy Crisler asked the council to delay the vote and pass a more complete law on all business signs.

“There are some business owners, such as my boss, who would like some input into the law,” said Crisler, who is a former Ward 1 councilman.

If the council voted on the business sign law on Thursday, no amendments would be allowed without entering into numerous meetings with the public, the Arnold Planning and Zoning commission and the city council, Crisler said.

Rockwood Drive No Parking Zone

During Thursday's work session, councilmen will also discuss creating a no-parking zone along one side of Rockwood Drive.
