Arnold's Hazardous Waste Disposal Event Draws 650 People

People waited in a line, one mile long, along Bradley Beach Road to safely dispose of their expired household products.

More than 650 people participated in Arnold’s household hazardous waste event at on Saturday.

Many people braced for the cold weather and arrived at the park early in the day, said Ward 2 Councilman Bill Moritz in an email to constituents.

City employees planned for people to drive their cars on Bradley Beach Road, then turn into the park’s main parking lot to drop off their unwanted household cleaners, paints and other hazardous materials in special tractor-trailers. The distance from Jeffco Boulevard to the Arnold City Park’s main parking lot is a little less than half a mile, according to Google maps.

Because of the long line of cars, city workers and volunteers redirected traffic to the Paws Park, a dog park and play area, located within Arnold City Park, Moritz said. Paws Park is about a quarter mile from the park’s main parking lot, according to Google maps.

Although new route lengthened the route by a half mile, the line of cars remained within 100-150 feet of Jeffco Boulevard, Moritz said.

Hazardous waste contractor Tradebe tasked a Memphis, TN crew to collect and transport the Arnold residents’ materials, Moritz said.

Arnold’s Parks and Recreation staff worked with Tradebe to coordinate the event and Debbie Moritz, from the city’s Community Development department, verified the participants’ residency in Arnold.

The event was held only for Arnold residents. Debbie Moritz is Councilman Moritz’s wife.

Dennis Mraz of the Missouri Stream Team 221, a volunteer group focused on protecting Missouri waterways and parks, also attended the event and learned how Tradebe works to protect the environment, Moritz said.
