Back-To-School Tax Holiday for Arnold on Aug. 5-7

City council members voted 8-0 to participate in the holiday to help parents with needed school items.

The City of Arnold will enjoy a sales tax holiday on back-to-school items purchased Aug. 5-7.

Council members voted 8-0 to approve Resolution 11-37 during the July 21 council meeting at City Hall, 2101 Jeffco Blvd, to participate in the Missouri tax holiday that will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Aug. 5 and end at midnight the following Sunday.

Passing the resolution would help Arnold residents with buying the numerous items needed for school, which begins in mid-August, City Administrator Matt Unrein said.

A few of Arnold’s neighboring cities decided to opt out of the tax holiday due to the economy, Ward 3 Councilman Paul Freese said about the possible benefits to Arnold parents and for businesses selling school items in Arnold.

Fellow Ward 3 Councilman Phil Amato said the City of Fenton, for example, will not participate in the tax holiday.

Other Jefferson County cities that have opted out of the tax holiday are DeSoto and Festus, according to the Missouri Department of Revenue website.

For parents and custodians of school-aged children, the tax holiday means Arnold’s-8.35 percent sales tax, which includes state and local taxes, will not be charged on certain school supplies, according to the Missouri Department of Revenue’s website.

The tax holiday only applies to items for personal use under the following conditions, according to the department’s website.

  • Clothing, which includes diapers and shoes–any article priced $100 or less
  • School supplies–less than $50 per purchase
  • Computer software–less than $350
  • Personal computers–priced less than $3,500
  • Computer peripheral devices–less than $3,500

Items purchased for businesses on Aug. 5-7 are ineligible for the tax holiday, the department’s website said.
