Movie Night May Return to Arnold City Park

The park would provide more activities, grassy areas and parking for people to enjoy the event.

Arnold residents may enjoy free movies at Arnold City Park in the coming months.

Attendance has been disappointing when the event occurred at the Arnold Recreation Center, at 1695 Missouri State Road, Administrative Assistant Teresa Kohut said during a Parks and Leisure Commission meeting on May 4.

Ward 1 Councilman Christine “Cricky” Lang said, “The recreation center is not quite the right place for a movie night.”

Mayor Ron Counts appointed Lang and to the commission on April 21.

The center has plenty of parking spaces for movie enthusiasts. The numerous lights in the lot and the lack of a large flat projection surface make it difficult to enjoy the film.

Ward 2 Councilman Bill Moritz, who the mayor also appointed to the commission, said he enjoyed the event when it occurred at Arnold City Park and the movie shown was “Top Gun,” the 1986 film about U.S. Navy pilots.

Residents can bring food coolers to the park’s grassy areas or pavilions and enjoy the event with friends and family, Moritz said. “I enjoyed parking my truck at the back (of the viewing area) and hanging out with friends.”

Commissioners are considering offering the movie event on June 25, the night of The Great American Backyard Campout.

Another possible location for the event would be Ferd B. Lang Park. The white sand volleyball courts and skateboard park would provide other activities during the event.

Final plans for the event have not been made.

Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly said Ferd B. Lang was the location for movie night. Ward 2 Councilman Bill Moritz suggested Arnold City Park for the event. The writer erred.

Clarification: The writer added a sentence to clarify that final plans for the movie night have not been made.
