Owners of Defunct Car Lot in Arnold Ask For Third Extension

The co-owner of Checkered Flag Motors asked the city for yet another extension on an order to clean up their defunct car lot. The city had received complaints about the unsightly property.

The co-owner of Checkered Flag Motors asked the Arnold City Council for another 30-day extension to remove non-running cars from her family's former used car lot on Jeffco Blvd.Mary Busby-Simpson made the request at the council's most recent meeting.

Ward 2 Councilwoman Michelle Hohmeier asked why the city needed to continue giving extensions for the clean up of privately owned property.

Interim City Administrator Chief Robert Shockey said the council would need to wave the junk vehicle ordinance that the Simpsons are in volition of. He said the Simpsons had been issued a junk vehicle notice in July and were given 14 days to remove 18 vehicles from the lot.

The owners met with city officials in July to gain more time, extending the 14-day notice to 30 days, Shockey said. In September they asked for and received a 30-day extension from the council.

“Most of the vehicles remaining on the lot are not junk and need to be repaired,” Busby-Simpson said. She said her family had suffered several setbacks that prevented them from getting the cars removed, including an injury to her son, who is also their mechanic. She promised to keep the property cleaned up while they seek a buyer for the lot.
