Public Hearing Regarding New Ward Boundaries Tonight at Arnold’s Council Meeting

The new boundaries must be agreed upon before Dec. 13, the first day of registration for April's election.

Tonight at 7 p.m. at City Hall, the Arnold Council will hold an public hearing to discuss the redistricting of the four Arnold voting wards, which must be approved by Dec. 13, the first day for eligible candidates to register for the April 2012 vote.

Census results show the wards' populations are unbalanced by 28 percent. The council most redistrict because the Voting Rights Act of 1965 allows for Arnold’s voting wards’ populations to vary only by ten percent.  The city must bring the wards' populations to within a 10 percent difference to comply with the law.

The current proposed changes would shift 870 residents into Ward 1 from Ward 2 and shift 117 residents to Ward 4 from Ward 3, as reported on a .

The bill will be voted on at the tonight’s meeting after the public hearing.

Also at tonight’s meeting, the council will vote on appointments and reappointments to the different Arnold commissions.
