What is your plan to deal with the expected budget constraints in the City of Arnold?

Let me start by saying that the City of Arnold is on sound financial footing, as has been shown by our most recent outside audit and the recent upgrade of our bonds from an A to an A+ status. Every city in this country has budget constraints. However our budget is balanced and there is no deficit spending. Because of the sound financial and regional planning that has happened over the last decade we find ourselves in the position of not having to lay off employees or cut services to make our budget balance. We have to stay on the track we have been on for the last ten years. Had we not seen the retail growth in Arnold that we have over the last several years the picture would be much darker.

What areas of Arnold need to be improved to attract businesses and industry to Arnold and why?

Jeffco obviously has seen its better days almost from one end to the other.Β  While there are still vibrant pockets along the road, there are others that seem to be falling into some state of disrepair. We have taken measures to try to encourage improvements and we have offered incentives to remove and rebuild sites entirely. For this reason we have now hired an economic development specialist. Someone who can reach out to business and private vendors and let them know what the city has to offer and what the plan for the future of the area is. I believe this is the key to our success.

What are your priorities in office and why?

My number one priority is not cutting staff, plain and simple. There is no position in the city that is currently filled that we could do without. Our employees work hard and they deserve to have security in their jobs. In these economic times people just simply cannot go out and find another job immediately and that has had crushing effects on your neighbors and mine.

My second priority is not cutting services that we offer for people such as brush pick up, snow plowing, road repair (I know the salt trucks did a job on the curbs but we are fixing it as fast as possible), parks services and the like.

My third priority would be seeing new ventures such as the Jeffco Express become successful. I believe this bus route to be one of the most important undertakings in my term. This has the ability if supported to really connect those in need of services, who don't drive, to those services without feeling like a burden to loved ones and without the extra cost of private transportation.
