Road Repairs on Richardson Road Soon

A Barnhart, MO, contractor received a $108,000 contract to repair about one-third of Richardson Road between Jeffco Boulevard and the I-55 overpass.

City of Arnold road contractors are expected to begin repairs along Richardson Road in the coming weeks.

Dura-Seal, a Barnhart, MO-based company and the sole bidder on the contract, will receive about $108,000 to repair about one-third of Richardson Road between Jeffco Boulevard and the Interstate 55 overpass, said Arnold’s Public Works Director Bryson Baker.

“We were very surprised we didn’t receive more bids,” Baker said to City Council members during the July 21 council meeting at City Hall, at 2101 Jeffco Blvd. Dura-Seal’s bid was a very good price, Baker said.

Ward 2 Councilman Jim Edwards asked if public works employees could perform the work at a lower cost.

Baker said yes city public workers could complete the work inexpensively because city employees are paid differently from contractors.

Arnold’s public works staff, however, would need a lot of time to complete the repairs, Baker said.

“And Richardson Road, more than any other road we work on, is very very dangerous. We don’t want to be out there,” Baker said.

Part of the work will occur at night and most of the contract will be for traffic control, Baker said.

City Administrator Matt Unrein said, “It would take my entire crew to do traffic control on Richardson Road; I would have to hire contractors”

City council members voted 8-0 to approve the contract.

Workers can begin working on Richardson Road within 10 days of the council's approval.

Clarification: This article version makes explict Ward 2 Councilman Jim Edwards' question regarding the cost of using Arnold public works employees on the project.
