World Trade Center Artifact Expected to Arrive Early This Week

In the next few days, the City of Arnold will receive a portion of the final distribution of steel from New York City’s former World Trade Center buildings. 

“All the steel is gone,” said Ward 1 Councilman Christine "Cricky" Lang during City Council meeting at City Hall, at 2101 Jeffco Blvd, on Thursday.

Lang said Arnold is one of 1,200 recipients, out of 12,000 applicants, to receive an artifact from the buildings destroyed on Sept. 11, 2001 when terrorists flew two 767 passenger airplanes into the two office buildings.

Arnold will use the artifact as the centerpiece for a 9/11 memorial being built at the Arnold Recreation Center at 1695 Missouri State Rd. 

Countries such as Greece, Italy and France will also receive artifacts for those countries' 9/11 memorials, Lang said. 

Lang said Arnold Recreation Director Susie Boone received a call from UPS, which is shipping the steel from the New York and New Jersey Port Authority, stating it would deliver the artifact to the UPS distribution office in St. Louis early this week. UPS would deliver-or City of Arnold staffers would retrieve—the artifact to the city.

The port authority is responsible for holding and guarding remnants from the WTC buildings. The department also determines memorial guidelines and approves memorial sites prior to distributing the artifacts to applicant cities, Boone said.

Lang said the U.S. flag would cover the artifact until its unveiling in the Arnold memorial at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 11.

Arnold police officers, Rock Community Fire Protection District Firefighters and veterans will carry the artifact to the memorial site, Lang said.
