World Trade Center Material Expected for Arnold’s 9/11 Memorial

Arnold needs to make final decisions on memorial's physical appearance prior to receiving steel this fall from New York's Port Authority.

The will receive a section of New York City’s World Trade Center Building 1 to use as part of a 9/11 memorial at the at 1695 Missouri State Rd.

Parks and Recreation Director Susie Boone announced the news during the City Council meeting, at 2101 Jeffco Blvd., Thursday night.

City Hall formally recognized the event as Resolution 11-24, which authorizes Mayor Ron Counts to accept a material transfer from the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey.

The remnants of the World Trade Center are stored in Hanger 17 of New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport and under the New York/New Jersey Port Authority’s control, Boone said.

Arnold will be one of 1,200 U.S. cities to receive a section in the coming months, she said.

Boone thanked Ward 1 Councilman Cricky Lang and Ward 3 Councilman Paul Freese for traveling with her to New York to discuss the request over cold bagels.

“What started as a conversation over cold bagels last November is becoming a reality,” Boone said to city council members.

Boone, in a memo to City Hall, suggested the proposed memorial be located between the Arnold Recreation Center and the . Both are on Missouri State Road.

“There are sidewalks and ample parking so that persons of all ages would be able to visit (the memorial) on a daily basis,” Boone wrote.

Lang, who has worked to have a 9/11 memorial event in Arnold, said a committee had been created to decide the details needed for receiving the steel and its presentation to the public.

Councilmen Paul Freese and Bill Moritz, along with members of the Arnold Police Department and of the , sit on the committee, Lang said.

The New York/New Jersey Port Authority will set the delivery date, Lang said. The steel will arrive at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport and driven to Arnold.

“It’s going to be an emotional day that day,” Lang said.

She said the city received parking permission from , at 1770 Missouri State Rd., in preparation of the delivery.

“My concerns are the children who are unaware of 9/11 and its effect on this country,” Lang said.

She said committee members are working with the Jefferson County Public Library-Arnold Branch to collect news items to help children  comprehend the events that occurred almost 10 years ago.

The delivery date for the World Trade Center steel is currently unknown.
