Fox, Seckman High School Basketball Teams Boost Conference's Wins

Three Seckman basketball players scored in double figures in a single game.

Last week's highlights included action in the Gateway Athletic Conference/Suburban South/West Conference at the Family Arena in St. Charles.

Rockwood Summit had a convincing 75-46 win over Fort Zumwalt East. Nick Bamvakais led the Falcons with 23 points.

Lindbergh, Oakville, Seckman and Fox also had wins for the Suburban Conference, which won 13 of the 16 games.

Lindbergh raced to a 12-1 lead after the first quarter en route to a 47-32 win over Fort Zumwalt West. Cameron McGuire had 11 points, five assists and four steals for the Flyers.

Oakville won its first game of the season despite scoring only two points in the first quarter. The Tigers beat St. Dominic 38-34. Austin Cibulka, Austin Gillmann and Ervin Sarajilic had eight points each to pace a well-balanced Tiger attack.

Seckman had three players score in double figures in a 57-48 win over Warrenton. Collins Edwards had 12, Jake Garrett 11 and Brandon Smith 10 for the Jaguars.

Fox won for the second time this season, beating Barat Academy 42-37.

Mehlville fell to St. Charles 59-55 as the Panthers suffered their fourth loss in a row. Cameron Stoner had 18 points for Mehlville, which led 27-18 at halftime.

Northwest also lost, falling in a tight one to Timberland, 49-46.

The game of the week in area girls competition came Friday night as Mehlville scored 37 points in the second half for a 56-50 come-from-behind victory over Seckman. Emily Fox had 12 points while Abby Hayden had 18 and Shelbey Stuckmeyer 15 for the Jaguars.

Patch Female Athlete of the Week: Sierra Gray paced the Panther girls team with 21 points against Seckman. 

Patch Male Athlete of the Week: Rockwood Summit's Nick Bamvakais led the Falcons with 23 points against Fort Zumwalt East.

The Christmas holidays means basketball, basketball and more basketball for area teams who will be competing in various tournaments, some of which start before Christmas.

One tournament, the prestigious 37th Annual Visitation Academy Tournament, began Saturday with eight games.

Cor Jesu is the only area team in the 16-team field and the Chargers began with a big win at Visitation. The Chargers, who were seeded 10th, upset seventh-seeded Webster Groves 36-31. Cor Jesu will next face second-seeded St. Joseph's Academy in the quarterfinals Dec. 26 at 8:30 p.m. The Visitation Tournament will run through Dec. 28.

Other area girls teams will be playing in tournaments at Seckman and MICDS.

Northwest is the top area seed at Seckman. The Lions are seeded second and will open against seventh-seeded Festus Dec. 27 at 4:30. Lindbergh, Seckman and Fox are also in the eight-team field. Lindbergh is seeded fourth and will open against the host Jaguars, the fifth seed, Dec. 27 at 1:30. Sixth-seeded Fox plays St. Clair Dec. 27 at 3 p.m. Pacific is the top seed and will open against eighth-seeded Hillsboro at noon Dec. 27. The championship game of the Seckman Tournament will be Dec. 29 at 3 p.m.

The Oakville girls team is in the eight-team MICDS Tournament which begins before Christmas. The Tigers will play their first round game Dec. 23 at 4:30 against Parkway Central. Triad, Westminster Christian, Villa Duchesne, Francis Howell, Clayton and MICDS are also in the field. The championship game will be played Dec. 30 at 6 p.m.

Seckman and MICDS also host boys tournaments although no local teams will play at MICDS.

Five area teams though will be playing at Seckman, including the top seed, Rockwood Summit. The Falcons will play Seckman in the first round Dec. 27 at noon. There will be another all area match-up in the opening round as third-seeded Lutheran South plays sixth-seeded Fox at 4:30 that day. Northwest, the seventh seed, is the other area team at Seckman. The Lions play second-seeded Fort Zumwalt East at 3 p.m. Windsor and Francis Howell North are the other teams in the eight-team tournament which concludes Dec. 29 at 4:30 with the championship game.

Bayless and Mehlville will play in the Chaminade Tournament. The Bronchos play Pattonville Dec. 27 at 5:30 p.m. and Chaminade Dec. 28 at 5:30 p.m. The Panthers play John Burroughs Dec. 27 at 7 p.m. and Parkway Central Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. The Chaminade championship will be Dec. 30 at 7 p.m.

Lindbergh is the only area team in the 16-team Meramec Tournament. The Flyers have a tough opener as they face De Smet Dec. 26 at 4 p.m. The finals at Meramec are scheduled for Dec. 30 at 7 p.m.

Affton is hosting an eight-team tournament. The Cougars open up Dec. 27 at 10 a.m. against Valley Park. DuBourg, Crossroads, Kennedy, Priory, Hancock and St. Pius are also in the tournament which finishes with their championship game Dec. 29 at 2:30 p.m.
