Lindbergh Boys Get the Last Bounce to Defeat Fox

In a game of teams and coaches that know each other well, this one went to the Flyers.

Lindbergh senior Mik Ebert didn’t have a break the entire game against Fox. Flyers coach Jason Wolfard picked Ebert as one guy that made a difference in Lindbergh’s first-round districts win over Fox.

“He made some big plays, some steals, and1s, things like that,” Wolfard said. “At points that I thought we could have lost the lead a little bit, he came up with the big play or the big steal.”

The point spread was hardly over five the entire game, and in the end, down to two. Lindbergh stayed ahead of district host, Fox 52-50 at the final bell, to advance to the district semifinal game against Kirkwood. Fox’s season ended at 5-20. Lindbergh stands at 8-9.

“We played hard, got the shots we wanted, got the looks we wanted,” Fox head coach Chris Wilkenson said. “You know what, a bounce here, a trickle here, and we’re playing Kirkwood on Wednesday.”

Ebert ended up with 10 points. Senior Blake Welch was team-high for Lindbergh with 11. Welch hit 2-for-2 free throws with under 30 seconds that maintained the Flyer slight cushion that they kept to the end.

The Flyers also got eight points from junior Nick Brohammer and senior Dan Watkins.

Fox junior Tyler Brewer was game-high with 25. He hit a 2-pointer and went 5-for-9 from the foul line in the fourth period. Junior Andrew Moorehead had 14 on the game.

“Tyler Brewer’s really good,” Wilkenson said. “People need to realize how good he’s going to be this time next year.”

Fox is a team of juniors this year, so Wilkenson will get everyone back. He likes that, especially since teams like Kirkwood are senior-led this year.

Whenever Fox and Lindbergh meet, it’s a meeting of teams that know each other well, including the coaches.

“I’m good friends with Coach Wilkerson,” Wolfard said. “He does such a great job, his kids play so hard for him. I’ve seen teams with a similar record who don’t have the heart at the end of the season as his. That’s a sign of him and his coaching, so it’s pretty impressive.”

Wilkerson brought up the friendship too.

“Jason is one of my best friends in coaching, one of my best friends, and he can coach a little bit,” he said. “He’s a really good guy and they made one more play than us.”

Lindbergh will go on to play Kirkwood (15-11) in the district semifinals on Wednesday, at Fox at 5 p.m.
