Seckman's Rodgers Has Amazing Baseball Week

Fox girls soccer has won three consecutive games.

The spring season has not begun for all area teams, especially those that had spring break last week, but there were some memorable first week performances for several area athletes.

Mehlville scored six times in the fifth inning to defeat rival Oakville 8-1 Tuesday. The Panthers pounded out 13 hits in the game with five different players (Chris Janssen, Austin Kretzer, Austin Simokaitis, Dylan Okenfuss and Matt Regan) having two each. Janssen went the distance on the mound for the Panthers. He gave up 10 hits, including three by Greg Gralike, but did not walk anyone.

The next day was a different story for the Panthers, . Sean Murphy had a huge day at the plate for the Flyers as he had three hits, all doubles, and four RBI.

Oakville rebounded in a big way from its loss to Mehlville as it shut out St. Mary's 15-0 Wednesday. C.J. Martin was overpowering on the mound as he struck out nine in four innings while allowing just one hit. Corey Chambliss and Luke Hassler had four hits each for the Tigers.

Mehlville also had a shutout during the week as Kurt McGuire went the distance in a 6-0 win over Hazelwood West Monday. McGuire allowed only two hits while striking out nine.

Seckman baseball player Mark Rodgers had an amazing week.

His biggest game came in an 8-6 victory over CBC Monday. Rodgers, a senior, had two homers and six RBI to pace the big win against the Cadets.

Teammate Collin Edwards had a week, which was very comparable. He went 8-for-14 at the plate.

There were a couple of head-to-head first week games, which matched area teams, and neither were close.

Soccer

The Fox girls soccer team has won three games in a row and Kayla Farr is a big reason. Emelie MeKeown also had a solid week for the Warriors as she scored two goals in a 6-1 win over Festus Tuesday and also had two goals in the win over Kennedy.

Northwest defeated Seckman 2-1 Wednesday in a battle of area teams. Ashley Mess and Bree Sharp scored the goals for the Lions.

Track

Seckman's Maranda Akers broke a school record in the opening week of the girl's track season as she cleared 9 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault.

Post Basketball

The Suburban East Conference announced its all-conference team this week and Affton had five players recognized, including standout senior Sean Benedict.

Benedict made the first team as he averaged 15.8 points and 12.2 rebounds a game while shooting 55.9 percent from the field.

The future looks bright for the Cougars as the other four players named were all underclassmen. Junior Halid Abera was named to the second team while junior John Brannan and sophomores Kohl Siebert and Reid Siebert were honorable mention picks.

Patch Male Athlete of the Week: Seckman baseball player Mark Rodgers had an amazing week. Rodgers went 7-for-15 at the plate during the week with two homers, a double and 11 RBI.

Patch Female Athlete of the Week: Fox soccer's Kayla Farr scored four times in an 8-1 win over Affton Monday. The junior scored the game-winning goal and added an assist in a 3-1 victory over Kennedy Friday.
