Notebook: Fox Baseball Starts Off Ablaze

Fox is 2-0 after impressive victories over St. Charles, 11-3, and University City, 15-9.

If the early season is serving as an accurate gauge, then the baseball team will be much improved this season.

The Warriors are 2-0 entering play this week after impressive victories over St. Charles, 11-3, last Monday and University City, 15-9, last Tuesday.

The Warriors were just 7-16 in 2010, but coach Neil Richardson has seen two extraordinary offensive displays to kick off the 2011 season. Senior first baseman Brett Hall and senior outfielder Tyler Miller are Richardson’s top two returning offensive players. Hall hit .362 in 2010 with 25 hits while Miller batted .361 with 26 hits and 16 RBI.

On the mound, junior Tyler Blankenship is the key returning pitcher after he threw a team-high 35 innings and started seven games last season, ending the season with a 3-3 mark. Fox plays at Parkway North on Monday at 4:15 p.m.

The Seckman baseball team, meanwhile,  returns to the diamond on Tuesday at 4:15 p.m. at Eureka. The Jaguars are 2-3 after falling 8-6 last Wednesday against Fort Zumwalt North. Seckman was 14-13 last season.

Senior infielder Zach Rutter is batting .333 and has five hits and five RBI through five games. Senior infielder-pitcher Alek Ferbet is batting .375 with six hits and three RBI. In 2010, Ferbet hit .425 with 34 hits and a team-best 20 RBI while Rutter hit .295 with 10 RBI. Junior pitchers Tyler McCorkle and Otto Schmidt each had good first starts this season and are 1-0.

Ferbet also led the Seckman basketball team (6-18) in scoring at 12 points per game and rebounding (6.9 per game) this past season.
