Rockwood Summit's Eisenreich Wins State Golf Tournament

High school athletes prepare for the playoffs.

Golf and tennis state tournaments were held last week.

A local golfer, senior Lindsey Eisenreich of Rockwood Summit captured the Class 2 championship.

The scheduled 36-hole event was shortened to 18 holes because of rain but Eisenreich left little doubt as to who the best player in the field was this fall.

Eisenreich shot a 72 on the par 70 Sedalia Country Club Course. That was a whopping eight strokes better than second place finisher, Sun Young Jung of Springfield Glendale.

Three Cor Jesu golfers tied for 59th place. Melanie Book, Rachel Dean and Angela Moro each shot a 96.

Rockwood Summit's Abbie Teague was 76th with a score of 102.

The Lutheran South tennis team qualified for the Class 1 final four for the second year in a row.

But the Lancers again finished fourth and this year did not win a single court on their two matches.

Last year Lutheran South lost to eventual champion Visitation 5-0 in the semifinals and then fell to Bolivar 5-1 in the third place match.

Lutheran South had a rematch with Bolivar in the semifinals this season with Bolivar winning 5-0. Barstow then defeated Lutheran South 5-0 in the third place match. Visitation defended its Class 1 crown while Rock Bridge did the same in Class 2.

Lutheran South sophomore Jessica Rakers did win a match in singles in the individual portion of the tournament at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield. Rakers lost to Danica Shimkus of Helias 6-0, 6-2 in the first round but came back to beat Ophelia Chen of Thomas Jefferson 6-2, 7-6 before being eliminated in straight sets by Margaux Kaesmacher of Warrensburg.

Emily Lewis did not fare as well for the Lancers. She lost to Breanna Feemster of Hillcrest 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and then lost to Cindy Wang of Pembroke Hill 6-1, 6-3.

Lutheran South's doubles team of Grace Schwerdfeger and Marthilda Kaipare also came away with a consolation win for Lancers.

Cor Jesu's Anna Sieckhaus lost a tough three-set match to Tess Herder of Lee's Summit in the first round of state. Herder eventually advanced to the title match before losing to Hannah Wille of Parkway Central.

Sieckhaus defeated Maddy Kayser of state champion Rock Bridge 7-5, 7-6 before losing to Danielle Benson of Kickapoo 6-3, 6-2 in the consolation quarterfinals.

FOOTBALL 

Oakville clinched a spot in the first round of the football players with a convincing . Moe LaGrand rushed for 126 yards on 17 carries and Andy Oliver completed 12 of 16 passes for 166 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the game in which all of the scoring was done in the first half. Eureka, which is Oakville's opponent next week, is also 2-0 in the district but both are assured of advancing since the top two teams from each district qualify.

Lindbergh's Grant Krueger rushed for 93 yards for the Flyers in their . Brendan Moore scored both touchdowns for the Panthers. SLUH defeated De Smet in overtime and is 2-0 in the district. De Smet and Lindbergh are 1-1 and Mehlville is 0-2. Lindbergh still has a shot at advancing as it plays SLUH in its district finale while Mehlville tries to play spoiler against De Smet.

Rockwood Summit moved to 2-0 with a 42-7 win over Poplar Bluff in Class 5, District 1. Tyler Karst completed 9-of-10 passes for 80 yards and three touchdowns for the Falcons, who play Jackson next week. Jackson moved to 1-1 in districts with an 8-7 win over Seckman. The Jaguars are out of the playoff picture at 0-2. They play Poplar Bluff (1-1) next week.

For the second week in a row, Affton had a late lead only to lose in Class 4, District 3. The Cougars fell to Windsor 14-7. Affton has to play Festus in hopes of avoiding a winless 2011. Festus had dominated both of its district foes.

Lutheran South's Dalton Schumer rushed for 180 yards and threw a pair of touchdown passes but again it was not enough as Park Hills Central won 62-40. Lutheran South, which plays Kennedy, in its finale, has given up 129 points in its two district games. Ste. Genevieve and Park Hills Central are each 2-0 in the district and will move on while Lutheran South and Kennedy are both 0-2 in Class 3 District 2.

Patch Male Athlete of the Week: Lindbergh football's Grant Krueger rushed for 93 yards for the Flyers in their 20-15 victory over Mehlville. But more importantly he caught a 70-yard touchdown pass late in the game with his team down by a point.
