Arnold Days Fishing Tournament Draws Young Anglers (Photos)

More than 90 children attended the fishing tournament at Arnold City Park during Arnold Days on Saturday.

More than 90 children gathered with their families in Arnold City Park on Saturday morning for the second annual Arnold Days Fishing Tournament.

Anglers 12 years old and younger cast their lines for a chance to win a new fishing pole and tackle box in the free tournament, sponsored by the Arnold-Imperial Optimist Club.

"The derby is going good. When you look around you see kids having fun and smiling," said Carl Dowdy, president of the Arnold-Imperial Optimist Club.

Alex Prater, 7, of Imperial; Trevor Gibson, 8, of Barnhart; and Daden Kane, 9, of Barnhart, said they were having a great time fishing together. "We haven't had any bites yet though," Kane said.

Forty fish were caught in total, with the longest fish measuring 26 inches. Awards for longest fish were given in three different age brackets.

Age 1-5 winners:

  • First Place - Joey Koenig
  • Second Place - Mason Turner
  • Third Place - Skylar Haas

Age 6-9 winners:

  • First Place - Daniel Deane
  • Second Place - Briahana Hart
  • Third Place - Charles Ploesser

Age 10-12 winners:

  • First Place - Andrew Crayen
  • Second Place - Kailey Summers
  • Third Place -  Tim Summers

A prize fishing pole was also given to D'Anna Smith, 9, of Hillsboro, for catching the smallest fish of the day, at 8 1/2 inches.

"The best part of the day was catching the fish," said Smith, who enjoyed her prize.
