Tourism Commission to Consider Adding Sports Events to 2011-2012 Schedule

Conventions, and two-day sports events would appeal to children and parents and prompt tourists to reserve a local hotel room.

Arnold’s Tourism Commission may begin to work more closely with the Parks and Recreation Department to increase tourism activities for the 2011 and 2012 fiscal year. The commission may also begin to develop partnerships with the tourism departments of St. Louis County, St. Louis city and Fenton. The tourism commissioners mentioned the ideas during the Tourism Commission’s meeting Wednesday afternoon at City Hall, at 2101 Jeffco Blvd. Tourism Commissioner Gary Allen and Parks and Leisure Commissioner Gary Plunk said, two- or three-day tournaments at Pomme Creek Golf Course or at Ferd B. Tourism Commission to Scale Back Summer Concert Series

The city's tourism commissioners are looking for lower-cost, family friendly events to increase tourism spending at area restaurants, gas stations and shops.

Arnold’s Tourism Commission Board will reduce the number of concerts, to two, this summer and consider other ways to use the grant money in the following years. “The purpose of the events is to bring people into our (Arnold’s) restaurants, using our gas stations, buying at our stores, and possibly having a family stay overnight in one of our hotel rooms,” City Administrator Matthew Unrein said during the commission’s meeting on Jan. 5. Unrein and the board members said there are two problems with the concert series: the declining number of people attending the events and the higher cost of bringing well-known performers to the city.
