Arnold Councilman Questions City Attorney's Time

Arnold City Attorney Bob Sweeney attended the Creve Coeur red-light camera case to prepare for the class-action lawsuit against Missouri cities using red-light cameras.

Arnold Ward 1 Councilman Doris Borgelt criticized City Attorney Bob Sweeney’s billing and legal strategies in an email to constituents sent in December. Specifically, Borgelt said Arnold tax payers were paying for Sweeney to attend Missouri Court of Appeals case regarding the use of American Traffic Solutions’ red-light traffic cameras in the City of Creve Coeur. St. Louis County resident Mary Nottebrok appealed a court decision regarding Creve Coeur’s red-light policy to the Missouri Court of Appeals, Riverfront Times reported. The case began Oct. 5, 2011. Nottebrok’s attorney argued to the appellate court that the red-light cameras violated a person’s right to due process. “We are paying for our attorney to attend and sit in the audience…

Mr. Van Leunen, Mr. Sweeney's bill should be included in the packet I receive as a council representative, I should not have to make a special request. If there is sensitive information on that bill, it should be as minimally redacted as possible, then the dates, hours billed and amount should be available along with the income, general and payroll warrants on line for all of the public to see. …   more ›

City Must Use or Lose $75,000 HUD Grant

The city must spend a landscaping/streetscaping grant, which has been in City Hall since 2004, by Sept. 30 or return the money to the federal government.

Arnold Council members voted, 8-0, to quickly start discussions with a landscaping contractor or lose a $75,000 grant from the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. The grant’s purpose is to improve the areas near Jeffco Boulevard and the Meramec River. The improvements are meant to increase the city’s appearance and improve the chance of bringing businesses into the area.  The money must be spent by Sept. 30 or the federal government will retract the grant, Arnold’s Community Development Director Mary Holden said during the City Council meeting on May 5.  Usually, the council votes only on issues listed on the meeting agenda. Delaying a vote until the May 19 Council Meeting would risk forfeiting the grant, Holden said. …

Poachers May Have Killed Albino Deer in Arnold

Mayor Ron Counts and Police Chief Robert Shockey want to buy patrol all-terrain vehicles to stop poaching in city limits.

Mayor Ron Counts announced a warning to people poaching animals within Arnold’s city limits. “They are going to have some real problems. We do have laws in Arnold,” Counts said during the City Council meeting Thursday at City Hall, 2101 Jeffco Blvd. Three albino deer roam freely through the city and its parks, Counts said to council members and people attending the meeting. Counts heard that someone had illegally hunted and killed one of the deer within the city boundaries. Counts said he was disturbed and bothered by this. A few residents said they were uncomfortable entering city parks because they saw people carrying hunting weapons on the grounds, Counts said. “We have kids around there,” City Administrator Matt Unrein said.
