A vocal opponent of Ward 1 Councilwoman Doris Borgelt said he witnessed her harrassing a group of campaigners outside of an Arnold polling place on Tuesday. Mike Evans, an Arnold resident who has publicly shared his criticism of Borgelt, said a group of teens held signs opposing Borgelt outside the polling place at the Fox C-6 Service Center on Jeffco Boulevard. Evans said he saw Borgelt pull several of her campaign signs out of the ground before running up to the group, shaking her signs and yelling. A disturbance broke out around 6:30 p.m. between a group of teens holding signs opposing Mayoral Candidate Doris Borgelt and the candidate herself. It happened at the Fox C-6 Service Center on Jeffco Boulevard. Mike Evans said he witnessed the incident unfold. He told Patch Borgelt ripped several of her campaign signs out of the ground, ran up to the group and began shaking her signs at them and yelling. "I was worried about the safety of the kids because they were right at the corner of Jeffco Boulevard and the entrance to the center," Evans said. "I just felt bad that she was harassing them." The most recent campaign finance reports show that Mayor Ron Counts' campaign committee has raised over $12,000 more than challenger Doris Borgelt's.
In his bid for re-election, Mayor Ron Counts' campaign committee has outraised challenger Ward 1 Councilwoman Doris Borgelt's by more than $12,000. That's according to campaign finance reports filed with the Jefferson County Clerk's office in the past week. Documents show that Counts' committee has raised $14,699 compared to Borgelt's $2,125. In addition to donations from supporters, those numbers include loans from each candidate. Counts loaned $1,300 to the committee last September and Borgelt loaned $1,100 to hers on March 5. A committee supporting Ron Counts' re-election to mayor has raised a little more than $11,000 this election season. That's according to campaign finance reports that were filed with the Jefferson County Clerk's office on Feb. 16. Committees that spend and receive a combined $1,000 are required to file disclosures that detail the campaign's activity. A committee supporting Counts' opponent, Ward 1 Councilwoman Doris Borgelt, hasn't filed a similar report for the upcoming election. The committee may not be required to if it hasn't raised the necessary amount of money for disclosure. Attempts to verify with Borgelt have been unsuccessful. Mike Evans, an Arnold resident who was serving as president of the Arnold Historical Society, stood up at last week's Arnold City Council meeting and told Ward 1 Councilwoman Doris Borgelt to stop harassing him. "There's politics, and there's below-the-belt politics," Evans said to Borgelt at the meeting. "You can keep bringing the punches, and I'll roll with them. But when you go for my family, and you want to denigrate me and go for my finances. That's a little bit below the belt. I think it needs to stop." The owner of We Buy Gold claims Ward 1 City Councilwoman Doris Borgelt harassed him and damaged his business. Borgelt denies the accusations.
An Arnold businessman who claims a councilmember has harassed him and damaged his business is threatening to sue Arnold unless the city pays him a $75,000 settlement. Anthony Burgio, the owner of We Buy Gold at 940 Jeffco Blvd. operating as Definition Holdings, is alleging Ward 1 Councilwoman Doris Borgelt has harassed him since May 2012, according to a Feb. 21 article the Arnold-Imperial Leader. Stanley Schnaare, Burgio's attorney, sent a letter to the city on Feb. 11 demanding a $75,000 settlement. Schnaare told the weekly newspaper that if the city didn't pay the money, his client would file a lawsuit.
