Details Remain Unclear in Polling Place Disturbance in Arnold

Very few details about the disturbance could be confirmed with the Arnold Police Department.

A vocal opponent of Ward 1 Councilwoman Doris Borgelt said he witnessed her harrassing a group of campaigners outside of an Arnold polling place on Tuesday.  Mike Evans, an Arnold resident who has publicly shared his criticism of Borgelt, said a group of teens held signs opposing Borgelt outside the polling place at the Fox C-6 Service Center on Jeffco Boulevard. Evans said he saw Borgelt pull several of her campaign signs out of the ground before running up to the group, shaking her signs and yelling.  Borgelt, who lost a bid for the mayoral seat, declined to be interviewed.  Very few details could be confirmed with the Arnold Police Department on Wednesday morning. Maj. Nick McBroom confirmed that officers responded to the polling place …

Linda, you couldn't be more correct. I've been personally insulted by her and her supporters on social media like Facebook, etc. We, as a City, can breathe a sigh of relief, and hope that we can move on to the business at hand, and get rid of this school yard sue-fest we have right now.   more ›

Arnold Police Respond to Sign Fiasco at Polling Place

A disturbance broke out between Mayoral Candidate Doris Borgelt and a group holding signs opposing her campaign at the Fox C-6 Service Center.

A disturbance broke out around 6:30 p.m. between a group of teens holding signs opposing Mayoral Candidate Doris Borgelt and the candidate herself. It happened at the Fox C-6 Service Center on Jeffco Boulevard. Mike Evans said he witnessed the incident unfold. He told Patch Borgelt ripped several of her campaign signs out of the ground, ran up to the group and began shaking her signs at them and yelling. "I was worried about the safety of the kids because they were right at the corner of Jeffco Boulevard and the entrance to the center," Evans said. "I just felt bad that she was harassing them." Anthony Burgio, the owner of We Buy Gold in Arnold, said one of the teens called him to come help with the incident. Burgio claims Borgelt has …

Exactly. Doesn't sound like much of a "disturbance" to me. And should we be surprised that Bob Shockey's PD would want to prosecute? He's not impartial here. If Mike Evans is his start witness, this will go nowhere.   more ›

Letter to the Editor: 'It's Time for a Change'

Jefferson County Councilman Bob Boyer endorses Doris Borgelt for mayor.

Editor's note: The following letter to the editor was submitted by Jeffesron County Councilman Bob Boyer. Dear Friends, I just read the latest edition of the Arnold-Imperial Leader, and I must say I am shocked! We have number of real problems in the City of Arnold. From failing sewers, to crumbling roads, to small businesses being forced to close, it's no secret that Arnold is a real mess. For some reason, local politicians, and even the editor of the local newspaper, have spent considerable time, money and energy on a smear campaign against my friend, Doris Borgelt. When my wife and I moved to the Arnold area in 2005, I started to pay attention to the local political scene. A good website for news and information at the time was …

This was a great choice in candidates wasn't it? I have to laugh at the part of Bob Boyer's letter that actually includes "humility" in describing Borgelt. She wouldn't know what humility was if it hit her in the head. I guess now he can add "harassing children when they disagree with her" to his list of attributes he admires about her. It doesn't take courage, strength or a sense of your own …   more ›

Who's Donating to the Counts, Borgelt Campaign Committees?

The most recent campaign finance reports show that Mayor Ron Counts' campaign committee has raised over $12,000 more than challenger Doris Borgelt's.

In his bid for re-election, Mayor Ron Counts' campaign committee has outraised challenger Ward 1 Councilwoman Doris Borgelt's by more than $12,000.  That's according to campaign finance reports filed with the Jefferson County Clerk's office in the past week. Documents show that Counts' committee has raised $14,699 compared to Borgelt's $2,125.  In addition to donations from supporters, those numbers include loans from each candidate. Counts loaned $1,300 to the committee last September and Borgelt loaned $1,100 to hers on March 5. More information on contributors to both campaigns is available in a table below.  Counts' committee spent $10,338 on printing, signs, postage, food and advertisements. (Disclosure: Patch is among the companies …

That is a pretty telling difference. It is one thing for city councilmen to bicker over bad behavior by one of our own and a mayor candidate to say it is the incumbent's fault. When these local businessmen, labor unions and community leaders get behind Ron Counts and only the local radical politicos and a contentious businessman support Borgelt, I think I am comfortable supporting Ron.   more ›

Ron Counts Raises $11,000 in Arnold Mayoral Bid

Contributors to Counts' campaign include Drury Inn, Jones Real Estate and Fribis Engineering. Counts' opponent in the race, Doris Borgelt, hasn't filed a campaign finance report.

A committee supporting Ron Counts' re-election to mayor has raised a little more than $11,000 this election season.  That's according to campaign finance reports that were filed with the Jefferson County Clerk's office on Feb. 16. Committees that spend and receive a combined $1,000 are required to file disclosures that detail the campaign's activity.  A committee supporting Counts' opponent, Ward 1 Councilwoman Doris Borgelt, hasn't filed a similar report for the upcoming election. The committee may not be required to if it hasn't raised the necessary amount of money for disclosure. Attempts to verify with Borgelt have been unsuccessful.  The majority—about $9,700—of Counts' contributions came between October and December 2012. The …

Doris Borgelt, 57 (Candidate for Arnold mayor) Questions 1. What do you currently see as the biggest issue facing Arnold?   Sewer and storm water problems plague many residents. Many still on septic systems have been promised sewer hook-ups for over 10 years. Recently $200,000 was allocated to expand the sewer for Metal Container. People are suffering with collapsing foundations from storm water eroding the grounds around them, yet we paid over $200,000 for a salt dome. Priority should be given to solving residents' problems and fixing what's …

Mike Evans to Doris Borgelt: Knock. It. Off.

Evans, who was serving as president of the Arnold Historical Society, told the Ward 1 councilwoman to quit harassing him during a public portion at last week's council meeting.

Mike Evans, an Arnold resident who was serving as president of the Arnold Historical Society, stood up at last week's Arnold City Council meeting and told Ward 1 Councilwoman Doris Borgelt to stop harassing him. "There's politics, and there's below-the-belt politics," Evans said to Borgelt at the meeting. "You can keep bringing the punches, and I'll roll with them. But when you go for my family, and you want to denigrate me and go for my finances. That's a little bit below the belt. I think it needs to stop." Evans also told Borgelt she needed to review the city's ordinances as they pertain to stalking, following people and harassment. "This kind of nonsense gives our city a bad reputation, it gives them a bad taste in their month, and I'm…

Why is it that everytime there is some form of contraversy, Borglet is right in the middle. Is that her secret to success and/or her plan to get her name more "recognized" for the April election????? Sure hope not. That sort of press does nothing more than hurt the City of Arnold, presenting us as a bunch of sneaky, nosy, busybodys.... It would be hard to trust anyone working for the City, …   more ›

The owner of We Buy Gold claims Ward 1 City Councilwoman Doris Borgelt harassed him and damaged his business. Borgelt denies the accusations.

An Arnold businessman who claims a councilmember has harassed him and damaged his business is threatening to sue Arnold unless the city pays him a $75,000 settlement. Anthony Burgio, the owner of We Buy Gold at 940 Jeffco Blvd. operating as Definition Holdings, is alleging Ward 1 Councilwoman Doris Borgelt has harassed him since May 2012, according to a Feb. 21 article the Arnold-Imperial Leader. Stanley Schnaare, Burgio's attorney, sent a letter to the city on Feb. 11 demanding a $75,000 settlement. Schnaare told the weekly newspaper that if the city didn't pay the money, his client would file a lawsuit. He said in the article, "Please consider this letter our 90-day notice of right to file suit to claim damages in regards to the actions …
