Tax Rates, Trash Service Voted on at Arnold City Council

A zoning request that would allow the construction of Richardson Ridge Villas was also voted on by Arnold City Council members during last week's meeting.

Arnold City Council voted unanimously to fix the property tax levy at 39.73 cents per $100 of valuation, the same rate it has been the previous three years. The vote happened during a council meeting last Thursday. Property values in Arnold did not increase much over the past year, said Deborah Lewis, finance director for Arnold. “We only went up a quarter of a percent—the Consumer Price Index would have allowed us to increase our tax levy. That would have added approximately 76 cents to every $100,000 of home value," she said. "But in discussions with the mayor and the city administrator, we decided to keep the rate the same, as we have for the past three years." Trash Talk: Arnold City Council Votes on Free Trash Pick Up

A debate over Arnold's long standing "free" trash service took over the city council meeting on Thursday.

  The question over Arnold’s so called “free” trash service rose unexpectedly at Thursday evening's city council meeting. Arnold hires Allied Waste to collect trash for city residents at a cost of $11.99 per household each month. The city is authorized to collect $7 a month from each household, which would generate  $565,908 in revenue that could be applied toward the trash service. The city has been waiving the fee for residents since 1999, according to City Attorney Robert Sweeney. The debate seemed to be split between the liberal and conservative council members. “The liberals want to spend the money and the conservatives want to give it back,” said Ward 3 Councilman Phil Amato.
