Library Foundation Acknowledges 2012 Donors The Jefferson County Library Foundation acknowledges the donors who contributed to the Foundation in 2012. During 2012 the Foundation raised $7,938 in corporate grants and personal donations. Since January 1st, the library has received another $700. The Walmart Foundation donated $3000 on behalf of the Arnold, Fenton and High Ridge Walmart Supercenters. The funds were used to purchase “View” players, hand-held DVD players with preloaded award-winning content for preschoolers. The three stores donated an additional $900 to pay for a one year trial subscription for “WishList” software that allows individuals and groups to donate to the Library Foundation or Friends online, using a secured credit …

The Jefferson County Library (JCL) will continue its popular “Food for Fines” amnesty on the final Friday of each month during 2013. The first amnesty date for 2013 is Friday, Jan. 25. Customers with outstanding fines for overdue materials may have their fines erased by donating canned food items. During 2013 the library will forgive up to $1 in fines for each can of food donated. On Dec. 28 the library collected 634 canned food items and waived $582 in overdue fines. During 2012 the library collected a total of 6,827 canned food items and waived $6,362 in overdue fines. Since the library began its Food for Fines program in 2005, JCL patrons have donated 49,941 cans of food to help local families during hard economic times, says JCL …

The Arnold Branch of the Jefferson County Library is holding its 15th Annual Poetry Contest.
The Arnold Branch of the Jefferson County Library has announced its 15th Annual Poetry Contest. Submissions will be accepted through Feb. 28. Entrants are encouraged to submit an original poem on any topic. Three winners will be chosen from each age category (5-11 years, 12-18 years, and 19 years and older). Guidelines and entry forms are available at the library or online at http://www.jeffersoncountylibrary.org. The Board of Trustees of the Jefferson County Library has adopted a tobacco and smoke-free policy for all library-owned buildings, vehicles and grounds, effective January 1, according to library director Pam Klipsch in a news release from the library. The use of tobacco products or electronic or smokeless cigarettes will be prohibited inside facilities owned or leased by Jefferson County Library, on library-owned property, and in library-owned vehicles. “We are making this change to a tobacco and smoke-free campus because of the concerns expressed by many of our patrons and employees,” Klipsch said in the news release. “We hope this will create a healthier and more welcoming environment for everyone who visits the library.” The current …

Customers with outstanding fines for overdue materials may have their fines erased by donating canned food items. During 2012 the library will forgive up to $1 in fines for each can of food donated. On Sept. 28 the library collected 608 canned food items and waived $545 in overdue fines. For the first three quarters of 2012 the library has collected a total of 4,812 canned food items and waived $4,512 in overdue fines. Flu shots to be dispensed before the onset of the main flu season.
The Jefferson County Health Department will dispense flu shots from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday at the Jefferson County Library, Arnold Branch, 1701 Missouri State Rd. The flu shot clinic will be in the Arnold Jaycees Community Room. The cost of the flu shots in the Jefferson County program is $25. Residents are asked to bring a medicare card or health insurance card with them at the time of the shot. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all children 6 months and older get a flu vaccine. It says: "Flu is more dangerous than the common cold for children. The Jefferson County Library continues its popular popular “Food for Fines” amnesty program on the final Friday of each month during 2012. The next amnesty date is Friday, August 31. Customers with outstanding fines for overdue materials may have their fines erased by donating canned food items. The library will forgive up to one dollar in fines for each can of food donated. On July 27, the library collected 675 canned food items and waived $640 in overdue fines. For the first seven months of 2012 the library has collected a total of 3,411 canned food items and waived $3,223 in overdue fines. All the food collected is donated to local food pantries. Want to flip through the digital pages of an eBook, but not sure how? The Arnold library will have a free class just for you on Thursday, August 23 from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. in the Community Room. If you own an eReader device or tablet, bring it along and the staff will show you how to check out and download library copies of eBooks and e-audiobooks with your Jefferson County Library card. The library uses the Missouri Libraries 2 Go collection, which currently contains Adobe PDF, Adobe EPUB, and Kindle e-books, which are supported by most e-readers and devices. Workers are in the second week of a three-week project that has closed the intersection in front of the Jefferson County Library, Arnold Recreation Center and Jefferson College.
On June 18, the City of Arnold closed a section of Astra Way bordered by Hwy. 141 and by Missouri State Road for three weeks. Construction crews will need to raze the asphalt and concrete on the road sections prior to installing a roundabout for the Astra Way Drive intersection with Missouri State Road; repaving Astra Way Drive between Hwy. 141 and Missouri State Road; and improving traffic signals, removing the median and installing new turn lanes at the intersection of Astra Way and Hwy. 141. The work is expected to improve traffic flow and reduce vehicle wrecks at the entrance way to Jefferson County Library, Arnold Recreation Center and Jefferson College.
