Meramec on the Rise, but Not to Historic Levels

Arnold and South County can brace for high water, but the 2013 flood, so far, will only be a moderate deluge.

It won't approach the historic Meramec River flood levels in Arnold and South County, but the Meramec River is on the rise, expected to reach a peak of 32.7 feet at about 1 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). And, as soon as it crests, it is expected to start receding, down to 28.7 feet on May 10. The river level was at 29.3 feet Friday, according to the NWS. Flood stage is 24 feet. This year's flood level is a far cry from the flood of 1993 that crested at 45.3 feet, or the '82 deluge, which reached a crest of 43.9 feet, or even the 1994 flood, which was 41.7 on the river gauge. All of those floods caused significant damage and road closures in Arnold and neighboring South County. This year, the road closures …

Emergency crews responded to a call on Sunday from someone who thought they saw a person in distress in the water. However, authorities were unable to find anything amiss.

After an exhaustive two-hour search on the Meramec River Sunday, emergency responders weren't able to find anyone in distress. Ron Harder, a spokesman with the Rock Community Fire Protection District, said the district received a call around 11 a.m. from someone who thought they saw a person in distress in the water.  "When crews got there, they didn't see anything out of the ordinary, and there were no bystanders around," Harder said. "They did a complete sweep up and down the Meramec for two hours, and then determined it to be unfounded." The Saline Valley Fire Protection District assisted in the call, Harder said. Crews did not do any underwater dives. "We take every call very seriously," Harder said. "If you see anything or think you …

Pictures of Meramec River's Receding Shoreline

As the Meramec River water levels approach historic lows, one Arnold Patch user takes pictures of the shoreline.

It's well-known that drought-like conditions have caused the Meramec River to move to unusually low water levels.  In a South County Times article, Cpl. Jim Barlow of the Missouri Water Patrol said the levels are the lowest he's witnessed in 18 years. Patch user Jerrry400 has been documenting the river's levels through photographs submitted to the Pics and Clips Gallery on Arnold Patch. Take a look at two pictures of the river from Friday compared to a photo from July 12. Have pictures of the Meramec River or anything else that you'd like to share with the Arnold community?
